Decisions Decisions

Wednesday, March 12th, 2003

I’m still trying to decide what to do about a new laptop. I’m a little torn and not sure which way to go (ANY advice/recommendations would be appreciated). Right now I’m leaning towards the Apple Powerbook 1ghz G4 for a few reasons. Probably most important is its size and weight. I’ve searched around and I just can’t find a comparable PC laptop that’s 1″ thick, weighs around 5 pounds and has a 15″ screen. I’d also like to try out OS X and try using a *nix system as a desktop as opposed to just a server. I’ve installed linux on my laptop and such…but I just don’t think it’s quite there when it comes to desktop computing. Finally, I can get a REALLY good price on it through school. Anyway…basically those are my only reasons for “switching.” I do have a few concerns such as hardware. I’ve read a few reviews where people indicated the systems run noticeably slower than PC’s. I’ve also noticed the screen resolution can’t be set as high as it can on a PC. The other concern is stability. Despite claims that Apple’s “never crash” I’ve come across a few unhappy owners who claim it just isn’t the case. As a side note I also read an entry in Jeremy Zawodny’s blog today where he mentioned OS X asked him to reboot after upgrading Java. DEFINITELY a step in the wrong direction there.

Vacation’s Over

Tuesday, March 4th, 2003

It’s time to go back to work, so I guess the vacation is officially over. It was a good trip. Getting away from work and school always is. It was good to see some friends and family I haven’t seen for a while.

The race was good too. Our seats were on the 4th row, near the end of pit road. We were facing Dale Earnhardt Jr’s and Jeff Gordon’s pit stalls. Being able to watch the pits was pretty cool, and something we weren’t able to do last year when we were between turns 3 and 4. I also enjoyed watching the fighter jets come and go from Nellis AFB which was just south east of the track. Oh yeah…unfortunately I forgot to take sun screen (again), so I got a little sunburned. But what makes it worse is the sun was off to the right side of where I was facing so I’m a little two toned now. The right side of my neck and face is a little red while the left is just normal. There’s not much of a contrast that you would notice it unless you knew, though.

Anyway…weekend was good, wish it would’ve lasted longer. Now I have to catch up on all the work and school I missed. I have a couple of things I wanna blog about this week, so hopefully I’ll be able to find some time to do so.
