Quick Update

I thought I’d take a minute to write a quick update. I moved into the new place a little over a week ago. Since then I’ve spent most of my time hanging blinds, adjusting blinds, unpacking boxes, installing a garage door opener and all the other fun things that come with moving in to a new house.

I also started a fly fishing class at BYU a week or so ago. We spent last Friday afternoon learning how to tie flies. I’ve gained a greater appreciation for those who can do it well. With a little more practice I think I might be able to create something a fish would consider biting. I decided to splurge and by a new fishing rod. I’ve been using a cheap fiber glass rod for the last few years and its suited me ok, but I tried an Elkhorn Rod in class a week or two ago and I was sold. The school gets an excellent price on them so I decided to take advantage of it. It should be here sometime this week. I decided to go with a 4-piece 5 weight, 9 foot rod. We’re planning our first fishing trip this Friday afternoon, probably to the Provo river. Our instructor said we’d fish the Provo a few times but one of his goals is to introduce us to some other good waters around Utah (excellent!).

Between the moving in, fishing class, oh and golfing (forgot about that) I haven’t been doing much else. Well…work as usual but that goes without saying. Summer time is great. Too bad it can’t last all year long.

    Whoa,

I just discovered your weblog and I feel like I’m reading about my own life. Fly fishing, golf, computers, byu. I got my BS in Computer Science degree from byu about 2 years ago. I currently live (rent) in Draper but work in north Orem. I’ll be buying a house/condo (anything to stop wasting rent money) around sept. or oct. I love to play golf and just shot a 79 for the first time last week at Hobble Creek gc (my fav. course). I got into fly fishing about 5 years ago and currently own a 5 weight and 3 weight. I mostly fish the lower provo but have also fished the middle and upper a few times. I’ve also fished Millcreek, Hobble creek and the Green a few times but I usually just fight the crowds and fish the lower provo. I’ve tried tying flies for a little while but it was pretty difficult to learn and time consuming and I always felt like I would rather be fishing than tying. Where did u end up buying a house? Anyway, keep up the posts and I’d love to see some pics of any fish you happen to fool while on the river.

    Jason,

Thanks for the comment. It just so happens that Hobble Creek is my favorite course also (I’m a little biased though, since I’m from Springville). I’m anxious to try out my new rod. My old fiber glass rod is a 6 weight, so we’ll see if I notice any difference. I usually fish the middle provo in south Midway (just before Deer Creek Reservoir) but I’d like to try a few new places. Amazingly enough I’ve never fished Hobble Creek. I always figured it was a little small and narrow for fly fishing. Where’s a good place to try up there?

The house I bought is in south east Provo. If you’re familiar with “old” Provo it’s right where the old Pioneer Drive-in was. I looked around at quite a few places in Provo and Orem and this was the place I liked the best for a few reasons. It came with a garage and was just all around nice. Nice master bedroom, nice kitchen, etc. Plus it has an unfinished basement. I tried to stay away from a condo cause I’m sick of listening to people who live above me. The only down side is they’re not really close to anything. Just kind of out on their own. Anyway, I’m very happy with the purchase.

Congratulations on the new house. I remember right where that drive-in was and had no idea that it had been taken down and turned into new houses (I haven’t been living in Provo for several years now).

Elkhorn eh? Their prices look extremely reasonable. We’ll have to fish together again sometime so you can show it off. Plus, I’d like to find out about these new waters that the instructor shows you. ;-)

Sounds like a plan, we’ll have to do it. I think he has two trips planned this week. One on Friday afternoon and the other on Saturday. Hopefully I’ll be able to attend both.
